. rondoroyal Suitable for the following scale(s): HO ScaleFrom the original Stephenson built Adler the first steam engine in Germany to the Taurus the most modern electric mixed traffic loco! To celebrate this unique milestone in history Roco have teamed up with Arriva to run a real Taurus loco carrying an artistic representation of the original Adler on the sides! On the 7th December 1835 the first public railway in Germany ran between Nurnberg and Furth some 5 miles away. The steam loco was called the Adler [Eagle] and was driven by an Englishman Mr. Wilson who subsequently settled in Nurnberg for the rest of his life and is buried in a place of honour in the city graveyard. The loco was actually constructed by the Stephenson works in Newcastle on Tyne and shipped in its component parts across the English Channel and down the river Rhine by barge continuing its journey overland to start King Ludwig's State Railway in Bavaria. Thus British standard gauge was exported to Europe Ludwig was the Bavarian Emperor more well known for the construction of his fantasy castle copied by Disney Neuschwanstein in the Bavarian Alps. Of course the original Stephenson built loco no longer exists although the replica constructed to celebrate the 100 years of German railways in 1935 is housed in the Nurnberg Transport Museum alongside the magnificent blue and gold Royal Train of King Ludwig. That replica of the Adler itself has been reconstructed and brought back to life after the disastrous fire in the museum a few years ago.klepon
